SLAVES OF THE STATE

In “Slaves of the State: Convict Labor and Clemson University Land and Legacy”, Dr. Rhondda Robinson Thomas explores South Carolina’s leased-convict system and the work [and workers] assigned by the state to Clemson “to clear land, erect buildings, and plant and harvest crops at the site of the new public college in the Upstate made possible through a bequest in Thomas Green Clemson’s will.”

The full article is available in The South Carolina Review, Volume 46, Number 2, Spring 2014.

“Locating African American Literature” is the theme of the issue, guest edited by Dr. Thomas and Dr. Angela Naimou.
